15.00-16.30 Sightseeing Opatija with local guide
It’s been one of the most “fashionable” tourist destinations on the eastern coast of the Adriatic for more than 150 years. Wealthy Italians and Austrians flocked here after elite hotels and lush parks, villas and summer houses were built in the middle of the 19th century. Later the town became even more splendid when the 12km long Lungomare coastal promenade was built that allowed people to stroll along the sea without worrying about horses and buggies (or cars today) from Opatija all the way to Ilka and Lovran. Everyone from Emperor Franz Josef to Anton Chekhov, Gustav Mahler and Isadora Duncan and James Joyce enjoyed summers here and the city has erected memorials to them and many others.

But there it is, magically perched on the top of a hill, surrounded by farms, lush forests, vineyards and valleys with a spiral of red-roofed stone houses curling its way up to the top. Wow. Motovun is rural medieval Istria at its most captivating—complete with a 13th century Romanesque-Gothic bell tower rising out of its center. Flanking it in the square is the Romanesque Municipal Palace, the largest secular building in Istria. Motovun has become a haven for artists and expats who love the area, the people and the peace. Every July, the place welcomes the world to the International Motovun Film Festival—and it’s pretty amazing that thousands do show up (including some famous film makers!) Motovun other attraction is gastronomic. Surrounded by vineyards, its Malvasia white and Teran reds are very high-quality varietals. And in, or rather under the forests, the famous white Istria truffle waits to be dug out.

The basilica, atrium, baptistery and Episcopal palace are outstanding examples of religious architecture, while the basilica itself combines classical and Byzantine elements in an exceptional manner…” Porec’s old town is also remarkably well-preserved, with remains of Roman temples and a classic main thoroughfare (in Latin, called Decaumanus) which draws throngs. Zagreb grew rapidly in the nineteenth century, and many of the city’s buildings are well-preserved, peach-coloured monuments to the self-esteem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Zagreb is more than just a gateway to Central Europe; it is a melting pot. The city incorporates all the benefits of the West with the promising opportunities of the developing regions in South and East Europe, making it an ideal location for your company. A vibrating city on the river Sava, at the heart of a politically and economically stable market, Zagreb has a long history, rich culture, offers high quality life-style, excellent prospects and a highly educated population boasting over 1 million people. The city offers a uniquely vivacious café life and a year-round programme of heavy-duty art exhibitions and at least one genuine cultural flagship in the shape of the recently opened Museum of Contemporary Art. This arrangement of the 14 Stations of the Cross is adorned with sculptures created by Croatian artists and leads to Calvary Hill. Even with all the attention it receives, the shrines biggest celebration occurred in 1998 when Pope John Paul II visited to beatify Croatian Archbishop Stepinac. A visit to Marija Bistrica is also interesting for the display of traditional Croatian crafts. Wishing to encourage tourists to stay after visiting the shrine, the tourist office has funded the development of crafts such as wooden toys, pottery, gingerbread and candles. In the middle of the settlement was a large square, a site where a variety of rituals were conducted. Based on the shape and proportions of the settlement it can be inferred that the builders of Lepenski Vir had a certain amount of mathematical knowledge. Around the fireplaces, sculptures were arrayed, made of round rocks and representing human figures. Initially just the heads were sculpted but in the later phase, the sculptures took on the appearance of full human figures and became idols.
